10 Key Principles

21ABA, Achievement for All 3As, Contact a Family, Mencap and the Council for Disabled Children have together developed some principles influenced by young people with SEND themselves. They outline the key committments which schools should adopt when tackling bullying of children and young people with special educational needs and / or disabilities (SEND). We believe that without this approach it is not possible to stop this kind of bullying.

10 key principles to reducing bullying in schools 

  1. Listens- all pupils and parents and carers are listened to and influence strategies and approaches to prevent, report and respond to incidents of bullying.

  1. Includes us all - all pupils are included, valued and participate fully in all aspects of school life, including disabled pupils and those with SEND.

  2. Respects - all school staff are role models to others within the school in how they treat others.

  3. Challenges - all discriminatory language is taken seriously and challenged.

  4. Celebrates difference – - difference in all pupils and staff is actively and visibly celebrated and welcomed across the whole school.

  5. Understands - all school staff, pupils and parents and carers understand what bullying is and what it isn't. They know how the school prevents and responds to bullying.

  6. Believes - all pupils and their parents and carers are acknowledged, believed and taken seriously when reporting incidents of bullying.

  7. Reports bullying - all pupils within the school and their parents and carers understand how to report incidents of bullying.

  8. Takes action - we respond quickly to all incident of bullying. Pupils participate fully in decisions made about them and help to formulate appropriate action to respond to incidents of bullying. See our guide.

  9. Has clear policies - our school's anti-bullying policy reflects these principles and is embedded within other school policies. They are widely and actively promoted to school staff, pupils and their parents and carers.
